Summer Treasures

"The purpose of life is to live it,
to taste experience to the utmost,
to reach out eagerly and without
fear for newer and richer experience."
               ~Eleanor Roosevelt

   If someone were to ask me, "What is your most favourite thing to do?" I am quite sure that I would answer, "Look at beautiful things!". It might be an inherited passion cultivated at the feet of my Mum whose love for old-world ambience and romantic atmosphere is so much a part of her sweet character. I worked in an antique store for seven years and I learned so much about beauty and history and how to appreciate the past. I love decorating and home and creating a space that is entirely yours surrounded by the little things that you love. Taking something old and re-fashioning it or giving it new life - pairing it with something new in your decor is also fascinating to me! There are so many new ways to incorporate vintage into your own style. This summer I have seen SO MANY beautiful things! I take little snapshots with my phone when I go somewhere lovely and I always think, "I will instagram this!", but then when I look later my phone is so full of pictures that honestly why not just do a full post to show you everything wonderful that I have seen? I have been to beautiful antique stores, interior decor stores and boutiques and these photos show a mix of old and new and utterly romantic! Perhaps they will give you some ideas about your own style...

Shades of Green

"Summer afternoon--summer afternoon;
to me those have always been the two
most beautiful words in the English language."
                      ~Henry James

   The summer is more than half over and August days are hoarded like a bright treasure - every moment of sunshine, every still evening, every chance to say that today was a beautiful summer's day is precious. I love to take walks in the late afternoon or evening. I am fortunate to live close to a sprawling park and my favourite path takes me along a ridge-line overlooking a valley of trees. I love the view from that path of the canopy of trees and fields. Green is the colour of summer for me. My home is filled with flowers and while green isn't one of my signature colours I do like to incorporate it here and there. You will usually see it in the delicate painted leaves on a piece of antique china, a framed floral, or washed across the gilding of a French mirror. I recently bought a small gorgeous green Florentine chest which I gave to my sister who I've mentioned before has a love for brighter colours. The Limoges cracker jar with pink roses was a gift from a friend and is a beautiful statement piece. When the Fall arrives I will look at my touches of green and wistfully remember the loveliness of summer...

Cream and Roses

"That beautiful season the Summer!
Filled was the air with a dreamy and magical light;
And the landscape
Lay as if new created in all the freshness of childhood."
               ~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

   The warmer weather has arrived and the last few days have been filled with picnics and pools, sunshine, and the smell of flowers! I love summer and the excitement behind even the simplest of activities. At the same time as my summer revels I have been working on photos for a special fall project. These are just a few 'extra' pictures that I thought you might like to see from my home. You can tell from these photos that my house has an overriding theme of soft cream and roses...
